Ever hear the phrase "You can't have your cake and eat it too"?
In life there are always occasions with sweet treats around-Birthdays, Halloween, Christmas, Weddings Christenings to name a few. We are bombarded by variety and special offers in shops, cinemas, restaurants, even the office/school vending machine!
Many people fall into an 'all or nothing' approach. This is where they are really strict on themselves for most of the time but in occasional moments of weakness they feel that they go over board and over indulge. In fact THIS is one of the key faults of restrictive diets. Restrictive diets may seem to work initially but eventually the individual ends up caving in. Research shows that these feelings of guilt and failure as a result of giving in to cravings can lead to vicious cycles of yo-yo dieting. Years of life are wasted by many (especially women) by this hectic lifestyle.
So rather than trying to constantly run away from the less healthy treats such as sweets, crisps, cake, chocolate (because they are ALWAYS around) a more valuable approach might to be to learn how to have a balanced relationship with food.
The 80:20 rule is one such approach whereby you learn to eat healthy 80% of the time so that when you have your treats 20% of the time, they won't make a significant difference to your weight/health.
My recipe for a healthy fudge below is actually quite nutritious but also delicious. There is no added sugars, only a natural liquid sweetener.
It contains the all and mighty cacao (cocoa) which is rich in iron, calcium, Vitamin C, some caffeine for an energy lift and theobromine which helps to release serotonin. Serotonin is our happy hormone which may be one of the reasons why chocolate makes us feel so happy!!
It literally takes minutes to make, very little effort and is a creative gift to bring to any occasion without the expense of boxes of chocolates/biscuits!
